One of the most critical elements of a successful startup is a team that understands and respects one another. Making a conscious effort to create a positive company culture is one of the best ways to ensure that this is the case. The earlier you take steps to create this culture, the better.
One great way to instil a sense of camaraderie among your employees is to provide them with effective and interesting team-building opportunities. The following are three team-building ideas you can use with your team:
Community service and happy hour
Every month, or every quarter, you and your team can leave the office a couple hours early and head to a local charity. The charity itself doesn't matter much, just make sure it's something that your team can support. After a couple of hours of helping the community, offer to take your team to a local happy hour -- a couple of drinks can certainly help people get to know each other.
Trivia or game night
Another great way to get your team working together is to have a trivia (or other game) night. An hour or two before the regular "closing" time, set up teams and play for a prize (can be something like an RDO, or something completely unrelated to work).
Get an office dog
It's been shown that having a dog around the office can lower blood pressure and stress levels in the office, and can bring people together for dog walks. Ultimately, it'll really be your dog, but letting the team feel a sense of ownership and responsibility can go a long way. Just make sure nobody in the office is highly allergic!
These are just a few simple examples of how to team build. If you have other ideas, be sure to let us know!
